BEI’s Bio-Curtain with EPI assists to
control spread of Avian Influenza in domestic birds
From the Center for Disease Control:
“Avian influenza is an infection caused by
avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These influenza viruses occur
naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in
their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However,
avian influenza is very contagious among birds and can make some
domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick
and kill them.”

“When highly pathogenic influenza H5 or H7
viruses cause outbreaks, between 90% and 100% of poultry can die from
infection. Animal health officials carefully monitor avian influenza
outbreaks in domestic birds for several reasons:
- the potential for low
pathogenic H5 and H7 viruses to evolve into highly pathogenic forms
- the potential for rapid
spread and significant illness and death among poultry during
outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza
- the economic impact and
trade restrictions from a highly pathogenic avian influenza
outbreak.
- the possibility that
avian influenza could be transmitted to humans”

Airborne dust in enclosed animal housing is known
to be closely related to transmission of many diseases of poultry.
Although some improvements in air quality can be achieved with proper
management and ventilation, results are limited. Failure to minimize
airborne pathogens in these areas can lead to disease problems.
BEI has exclusively-licensed technology developed
by the USDA/ARS Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory defined as an
electrostatic space charge system (ESCS). BEI is marketing this
system as EPI, or “electrostatic particle ionization”.
EPI has been shown to be effective in reducing
airborne dust and bacteria in poultry housing via a number of USDA
studies (bibliography available). The EPI is used to charge airborne
dust particles causing them to be attracted to grounded surfaces, and
test results have shown an average reduction of 64% for bacteria and
37% for dust concentration. Reductions in airborne dust and bacteria
by EPI suggest the system has potential for reducing disease-causing
organisms in poultry housing.
BEI is also cooperating with the swine industry
and University of Illinois researchers to demonstrate the
effectiveness of EPI in reducing dust and odor emissions from
mechanically ventilated swine facilities. Similar demonstrations are
in the planning stage for Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska.
